Featured Artist Interview:

Interviewer: How did you first hear about Mission: Renaissance and The Gluck Method?

Paula: Initially through my x-husbands family who live in St. Thomas. I later met Larry personally and it was at that time that he told me about Mission: Renaissance.

Interviewer: When did you begin taking classes in The Gluck Method?

Paula: About 3-1/2 years ago.

Interviewer: Had you taken any classes prior to that?

Paula: When I was in art school about 40 years ago.

Interviewer: How would you summarize your artistic ability before attending classes in The Gluck Method?

Paula: I had a lot of interest and desire to draw and paint but I had very limited skills. I was winging it. Truthfully, every time I hit a wall while painting, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know that there were basic skills I was missing and that my trouble was simply because I was not sufficiently trained in those skills.

Interviewer: And how would you summarize your ability now?

Paula: It’s actually beyond night and day as a difference! Early on in my training, on Larry’s Basic Line Drawing Course, I realized that I hadn’t been taught how to draw or paint, despite attending a prominent U.S. art school. In fact, I had not received one minute of actual instruction on how to draw or paint in the two years I attended that school! But at Mission: Renaissance, with The Gluck Method, every single skill I have learned has been a real breakthrough for me as an artist. I have realized that learning to draw and paint is actually easy! And, I now know that anyone can learn to draw and paint! As a result I feel like I have started fresh as an artist and I have a whole new, creative life ahead of me. The breakthroughs I have experienced with The Gluck Method were not just in the beginning, they have continued all through my years of training at Mission: Renaissance.

Interviewer: If you could isolate one thing that made The Gluck Method so successful for you, what would that be?

Paula: What sets it apart is that the skills you learn are being presented in a brilliant gradient. They aren’t all over the map. You can be below stick figures and build a solid foundation as an artist. No matter your skill level begin with, you can start taking lessons in The Gluck Method and successfully go from one step to the next and become very capable as an artist.

Interviewer: Which medium or technique that you have learned is your favorite?

Paula: That’s hard to answer. They’re all so much fun! Can I back up to your last question?

Interviewer: Sure!

Paula: I wanted to say that one of the things that has been so rewarding is that the fundamental skills I learned on The Basic Line Drawing course, the tools you learn, are every bit as applicable as a painter. Whenever I find myself struggling with a painting I step back and I find what I need to fix and it is usually something I learned on that first course.

Interviewer: That’s great!

Interviewer: You are the Administrative Director at Mission: Renaissance right?

Paula: Yes.

Interviewer: What exactly do you do?

Paula: Well, primarily I am in charge of personnel interviews and hiring for Mission: Renaissance. I also see to it that all of the members of our team are doing well in their position and that any difficulties are addressed and resolved quickly. More commonly it would be referred to as Human Resources.

Interviewer: So you get to see a lot of people get introduced to The Gluck Method for the first time?

Paula: Yes.

Interviewer: What kinds of things do you hear from them regarding their training?

Paula: Almost one-for-one it’s phenomenal! So many of them are blown away and amazed how easy and fun The Gluck Method is and how applicable it is.

Interviewer: Okay, last question. You have a unique opportunity to attend a class each week with Larry Gluck personally. I’m sure many of our readers would love to hear what that’s like.

Paula: When you’re in class with Larry, you know that you are being helped by a Master. He has such an effortless confidence and ability to zero in on where I am missing something and help me see and adjust what I’m doing – it’s inspiring.
